Grown and harvested in Thailand, Birdseye chili peppers are perfect for spicing up soups and curries. Small peppers can be added whole while cooking and are also easy to remove afterwards. They can be chopped just as well with a sharp knife or in a chili grinder.

Spicebar Birdseye chilies are very hot with a light fruity aroma. Their capsaicin content is 140,000 scovilles on the Scoville scale. By comparison, cayenne pepper made from Birdseye chilies is typically 30,000 scovils. but this, a special variety of chili selected by Spicebar, is even hotter.

Birdseye chili ( Capsicum frutescens ) belongs to the paprika genus, the nightshade family. Grows mainly in South America and Thailand. First described in 1750 - described by botanist Carl Linnaeus. These chilies got their name because, since birds are insensitive to the sharpness of chilies, they can eat their fruits and spread the seeds over a wide area.

Birdseye chili grows in small bushes up to 2m high. The fruits grow as pods. Birdseye chilies contain almost twice as much capsaicin as most other peppers.

Chili can be used both whole and cut - with a sharp knife or a chili cutter.
